I cal this song "Like a Phoenix" because Joplin was kind of at nothing and rose into something more powerful.
After the tornado I started playing. I played a lot more than I did before. I just wrote that song with the emotions that I was feeling at the time. At the beginning it is just nice and normal, like very thing was in Joplin, just normal. And then everything started getting weird with the weather right before because everything was just still and the song changes there. And then the tornado happens and its kind of chaos. The thing at the end, its just pretty because after the tornado you just saw so many people helping, and loving you, and it was awesome. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
It gave me an outlet to express myself and I think it does for a lot of musicians, and the same with painters or dancers or anything. That is their way of expressing how they feel. Cause a lot of the time people can't express themselves just by talking. That does help a lot of the time. But I feel that everybody has something where they feel like they can really just express themselves and just get some of that emotion off of their shoulders. Just put it out there.
In 2011, a destructive Tornado went through Joplin, MO, destroying a third of the community.
